Support Your Local Conservation District!
Why are Conservation Districts important? Michigan's Conservation Districts
are "unique" local entities of state government that utilize state, federal
and private sector resources to solve today's conservation issues. The guiding
philosophy of all Conservation Districts is that decisions on conservation
issues should be made at the local level, by local people, with technical assistance
provided by District staff and partner agencies. The Lapeer Conservation District
brings forestry assistance to hundreds of landowners each year, technical assistance
for groundwater quality and farmland preservation, conservation education programs
to Lapeer County schools, educational workshops, and annual tree sales.
Michigan Conservation District funding is in jeopardy due to the proposed 2010 budget
cuts in the State of Michigan. All Conservation Districts in Michigan are currently
operating on a very minimal funding from the State, $9,579 each. Many Districts
leverage this small State appropriation into larger funding from other environmental
agencies and organizations. Over the years (in Lapeer County, since 1942!), Conservation
Districts have proven to be an effective, cost-efficient way to assist private
landowners with their natural resource concerns.
How can you help? Well, first of all, keeping buying trees! The proceeds from the
sale are crucial to our operating funds. Also, please call your local
representatives and show your support of Michigan Conservation Districts by requesting
that the 2010 Conservation District funding be maintained.
